America's Promise

America's Promise

General Powell reading with young man

"America’s Promise is pulling together the might of this nation to strengthen the character and competence of youth. And it’s working."

-- Founding Chairman, General Colin L. Powell

The Mission of America's Promise is to mobilize people from every level of American life to build the character and competence of our great nation's youth by fulfilling Five Promises for young people:

  1. Ongoing relationships with caring adults in their lives - parents, mentors, tutors
  2. Safe places with structured activities during nonschool hours
  3. Healthy start and future
  4. Marketable skills through effective education
  5. Opportunities to give back through community service

Idaho's Promise

More than 30 Idaho delegates attended a Summit in Philadelphia and returned with a vision to provide the Five Promises to Idaho children and adolescents. They will mobilize local social and economic capital to help ensure a healthy future for this state's next generation.

Idaho's summit to kick off this statewide initiative was held in April of 1998. One outgrowth of the Summit was the concept that AmeriCorps members would serve as community "Promise Fellows" in Idaho to mobilize local citizens to strengthen and focus their efforts to deliver the Five Promises. The Promise Fellow initiative coupled with the formation of Communities of Promise within the state strengthens and supports the efforts of many organizations and youth-serving agencies by providing collaborative resources to help accomplish these objectives.

THE FUTURE OF OUR YOUNG PEOPLE DEPENDS ON US!
Young people need our love and care. We as Idahoans can work together as partners with a diverse range of talented and dedicated state & national resources to create healty Idaho communites for our youth.

For further information on how to become a "Community of Promise", please contact Erin Dooling, Program Director for Idaho's Promise AmeriCorps located at the University of Idaho 4H Extension office.
